A BIO (kind of)
---
"It's a Beautiful Day" was the response I got when I asked someone what they would name one of my paintings. (that big honkin' one that measures 3'x12' if you havta know.) I couldn't ask for a better compliment. It's exactly the feeling I hope to give people with my art.
---
I don't name my paintings for the same reason I don't want to know the true meaning behind someone's song lyrics. I just don't want that mental limitation imposed.
Besides, if I could name what I paint, I could probably describe what it means, and then I'd be
an author instead of a painter.
---
People often ask why I chose the "slice" format. Truth be told, it popped into my head one day while staring at a wall. I pursued making that image into reality. I'm still pursuing. One day I hope to put a bazillion foot long one on the side of one of those boring grey buildings...
Besides, I like the fact that this extreme format makes some people feel compelled to mentally "expand" or "finish" my paintings. That gives them the opportunity to fill in whatever kind of details they want. Then it becomes their art, too.
Some people like that...and some people really, really don't. Hmmmm.
---
I like square formats as well. There's something friendly about square shapes. And it's nice to have a change from the slices occasionally. I haven't experimented with dodecahedrons yet...

Since I've been asked...
I was born in the South but now I live here. And I have lived here long enough to pretty much validly call California my home.
I am ----- years old, and if you need more information I'm sure the internet will provide it to the diligent.
No, I'm not Miss Maine (LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!)
We just have the same name, darn it.
No, I don't have a CV (i.e. curriculum vitae, i.e. resume). Partly because I'm a horrible record keeper and I've forgotten too many things and partly because they creep me out for some unknown reason. Ask me again later.
But- to somewhat satisfy those who are curious- I started oil painting in 1969 in San Juan Capistrano (yes, home of those swallows). I did eventually get a degree in studio art from an actual college. I have had my art at some shows and in some galleries over the years, and I have won a couple of awards. I've even sold some stuff. Go figure.
---
If you like my art, thank you- tell a friend. If you have any friends with money have them buy something from me - I'm always running low on turp and canvases.
If you don't like my art, feel free to tell me.
However, you must spell correctly and not use profane language unless you've done so in a clever and creative manner.
If you have any questions- ask.
As you can tell, I do try to keep a sense of humour. I do like to use that extra "u" when spelling humour and watercolour -and- I like a little whimsy on a daily basis.
It can be difficult to find wonder (in the primary definition of the word- not the singer, the superhero, the doubt or the horse), but it is out there.
And so I do hope that for you...
...It's a Beautiful Day.

HEY IT'S ANOTHER YEAR!!!
2010 to be exact. And if you're like me, and like most people I know, it's been a hell of a ride the last few months.
One of my friends said, with an uber-serious expression:
"Guess how much I lost in the stock market?"
"How much?" says I, concernedly
"NOTHING!" he laughs. And I realize I've been played because it's not like me or anyone I know ever has enough money to buy stock anyway. Other than the kind you cook with.
I hope the recent world has not been unkind to you- or at least any more unkind than usual, but if it has, remember the words of Bernard Baruch as was passed along to me many years ago by my at the time 90-something year old Grandpa:
"The art of living lies not in eliminating but in growing with troubles."
I didn't get it at the time, but I do now.
I like to think of the Earth as kind of a University for the Soul. You may quote me on that but don't steal it please - I might write a book about it sometime...
I think that humankind is here to learn stuff. That's all. Everybody has something they're supposed to learn, and it's different for everyone. Some of us have more difficult lessons to learn than others. Some of us may be responsible for teaching a lesson. Hard to say. But it makes life make a little more sense to me when I think of it like that. I wonder what happens if you graduate...
Anyway, I think there's a lot being learned right now by a lot of people all at once.
So hey- remember:
Be kind, it doesn't cost you anything.
Be smart, ditto.
Hug something warm and cuddly as often as you can.
Best,
MKD

Goofy self portrait so you will recognize me without my name tag if you come to one of my shows. Yes, I do usually have a goofy look on my face. And your point is...?
